Steven Zary, DVM, was a three-year-old in pre-school when he dictated the following to his teacher: “I want to be a vetranarian. (Spelling mistake is the teacher’s.). “I would take care of elephants and either dogs, dolphin, penguin and cats.”
Most people struggle through several career ideas or college majors, but not Dr. Zary. He knew.
“Now that I have realized that dream, I could not be happier with the career I have chosen,” he said.
Dr. Zary has joined West Suburban Veterinary Associates (WSVA) as an associate veterinarian. His areas of expertise are ophthalmology, ultrasonography, dermatology, internal medicine, and exotic/wildlife medicine. WSVA is located at 518 N. Warwick Ave., Westmont.
He completed his undergraduate degree in 2013 at Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois, graduating magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology and a minor in Biochemistry. He then attended the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine and graduated with honors in 2016 with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree.
“During my time in vet school,” he said. “I was heavily involved in the Wildlife Medical Clinic which is where I gained my love for exotic animal medicine.”
“We welcome Dr. Zary to the practice,” said Dr. Alan Main, owner of WSVA. “His experience in ultrasound, medicine, and ophthalmology as well as exotics medicine are a wonderful addition to our hospital. His positive energy and warmth are a blessing for our clients and of course, our patients.”
He lives with a shih tzu named Cappuccino and a crested gecko named Blitz.
